Jack Thompson Disbarred

Jack Thompson, self-proclaimed crusader against video game violence, has been disbarred in Florida, and not a moment too soon. Thompson’s ravings have done little to draw constructive attention to important issues surrounding excessive gaming or the content of the games children and youth are being exposed to. Who could possibly hear a positive message over the shrill self-righteous messianic proclamations of Mr. Thompson?

Frankly, Thompson has brought his declared Christian faith into disrepute. Those of us who attempt to daily live and walk a relationship with Jesus Christ based on grace and patient understanding can’t help but grow ever more frustrated with the brand of Christianity Thompson attempts to shove down the throats of gaming industry executives. I am pulling my hair out as I read about some of the nonsense and ridiculous fights Thompson has picked with the gaming industry over the past few years, where he could have been a peacemaker. I am embarrassed for him.

We need a new dialogue with the gaming industry, its advocates, customers and others who are concerned about the impact that interactive entertainment is having on our society. Who will step forward from all sides and speak rationally and calmly to build consensus on the future of the industry?
